On what the Met Office tells us was the hottest 1 May since records began, the cream of Berkshire Women’s Golf took to the fairways of Calcot Park Golf Club to compete for the Tegner Trophy, Tournament Cup and places in the County Championship.

Winter hadn’t been kind to Calcot.  The club had put in additional drainage but the very wet weather meant the heavy machinery caused a lot of fairway damage which then didn’t heal because of the very dry March.  Preferred lies were still in operation which mitigated the problems somewhat.  The kindness of the clubhouse staff made up for any shortcomings on the course.

Youth came to the fore.  Three of the prize winners are still Juniors and another winner only ceased being a Junior in the new year.  This augurs well for the future of women’s golf in Berkshire.

The player who improved most between morning and afternoon rounds was Grace Canning (Donnington Grove), 8 strokes better.

The club going through to represent Berkshire at England Golf’s Champion Club is Castle Royle – just one stroke better than Calcot Park.  We wish them the best of luck and hope they can emulate their men who won the Men’s trophy in 2024.
