Held at Mapledurham GC on 26 September 2024
The previous few days had seen terrible flooding throughout the county, course closures and a weather forecast for thunder and lightning. Despite the poor weather outlook all 48 players headed out from the first tee, suitably briefed by Airlie Dyson, County President and starter for the day, on what to do if bad weather struck. Regrettably, most players were unable to complete their rounds due to torrential rain, flooded greens and then every golfers dread – the lightning!
BWG thanks go to everyone at the club, particularly Martin the events manager who organised the day and coped admirably with the tight squeeze in the club house due to the inclement weather and the ongoing building works to the building. Many thanks to Anne Nowell, Mapledurham’s Lady Captain for arriving early and helping out the BWG team. Very many thanks to the catering and bar staff who worked tirelessly to provide drinks and food earlier in the day than was planned. Not forgetting the greenkeepers whose skills were tested with the recent terrible weather.
An executive decision was made and the prizes were awarded for the first nine holes. Airlie Dyson presented the prizes. In 1st place with 20 points ocb were Liz Watt and Jax Lawrence from Castle Royle.
In 2nd place with 20 points were Susan Allen and Gail Fuller from Castle Royle.
In 3rd place with 19 points ocb were Alix Waldman and Gisela Bradbury again from Castle Royle.
Castle Royle didn’t make a clean sweep of the prizes as Susan Ramsden and Ve Adams from Sand Martins were in 4th place.
Nearest the pin for Division 3 was won by Jo Thompson from Mapledurham. Due to the weather no one had a chance to win the Division 2 nearest the pin prize.
Finally, my personal thanks go to Marion Walker for her assistance throughout the day and especially to Deirdre Cuthbert on all her help in pointing me in the right direction over the last year and in ensuring that the event ran as smoothly as it could with the terrible weather for the day.
